Air Abrasion is a gentle spray of an air-and-powder mix that removes tooth decay. No needle is required. Air Abrasion is an exciting new technology which allows teeth to be treated for decay often without the use of the dental drill (handpiece). The concept is fairly simple, and can best be described as a high tech mini sandblaster. The air abrasion unit sprays a fine stream of tiny aluminum oxide particles that almost literally "blow away" the decay. The dentist can control the cut made by adjusting the amount and pressure of the powder stream coming out of the unit. Air abrasion is best suited for small to medium cavities which are to be filled with tooth colored composite restorations.

The single biggest advantage of air abrasion for patients is that it does not typically require local anesthesia, i.e., a shot of Novocaine or other anesthetic used to numb the part of the mouth on which a dentist is working to keep the patient comfortable. Because local anesthesia is not usually required, the dentist also is able to work on multiple sites in one visit, reducing the visits it takes to complete a treatment plan. Patients also leave the dental office without residual numbness in the tongue or lips.
