Dear Dr.D.Unger
Hi, I am 21 years old and my teeth are starting to space. I had my braces taken of when I was 15. I had a retainer for a short time and the dentist told me he would have to make a new one because it wasn't working on my teeth. It was way out of my price range so I have gone without a retainer. Now my teeth are spacing so I was wondering if I could still get some kind of retainer to correct this problem. I really hope that I don't have to get braces again. Actually it's on one tooth that is spaced on the side of my mouth. Can you please tell me what steps the dentist will have to take to fix this problem. Thank you so much for your time.
Sincerely, Kelly
Hi Kelly,
Without actually seeing your spaced teeth its hard to give accurate advice. If your teeth looked perfect when the braces came off then the best thing to do is go back to the orthodontist to let him move them back and stabilize them. If you want to avoid braces it may be possible to fill in the spaces with bonding. Please call the office to arrange a quick consultation at

Dear Dr. Unger,
I have a cap on my front tooth will your laser whitening be able to also lighten the cap and also how much does this cost?
If you have a porcelain cap there is no way to whiten it except to do it over. If you have a cap made of acrylic or composite then there is a way to resurface it . As far as the cost of whitening your teeth both upper and lower it is $400. The best thing to do is to call the office and arrange for a free consult. Just call 9796767

Dear Dr. Unger,
I am a 48 year old male, my bottom front teeth are crowded and out of line I really don't like to smile. Is it possible to have cosmetic dentistry done so it would at least appear that my teeth look better.
Ed
Dear Ed,
It certainly possible to straighten crooked and crowded teeth. There are three ways to do this. The first method is to have braces. The second is to extract one or two of the most out of line teeth and cap the others, The third way and the easiest way is to bond the teeth that are recessed and reshape the ones that are too far forward. Give me a call at 979-6767 to arrange a consult.
Hello Dr.
My name is Janele and I am rather new to Staten Island. I am looking for a dentist who can do extensive cosmetic dentistry. But, first I have several questions. About ten years ago I had porceline veneers on my top five front teeth. I was under a strict budget so I had only five done and the remainder of my top and bottom teeth were bonded. I had this work done because I had serious stained teeth from medication as a child. The bonded material has worn off over the years and some has cracked. As well, the veneers were never as white as I wanted them. I also have numerous cavaties and one cracked tooth in the back of my mouth. I really want to know if it is possible to start all over and have all of my teeth done in new white porceline veneers. That is can my old veneers be taken off and the bonded material be removed from the other teeth while also having the cavaties in my back teeth repaired.
Thank You for your time.
Dear Janele,
Yes, the veneers and bonding you have can be removed and replaced with new all porcelain crowns and veneers provided your teeth are still basically in good shape and the bite is normal. I would be happy to do a free consultation to discuss the options you have. Just call the office at 979 6767 to arrange for it.

Dear Dr. Unger,
I have severe tetracycline stains. Do you have a method that will help me?
Joe
Dear Joe,
Yes I can help you. There are three ways to deal with tetracycline stains. The first is to use a whitening gel on the teeth over a prolonged period of time. This method is unpredictable, sometimes there is satisfactory results and sometimes it is ineffective. If you want to definitely get rid of the stain and have natural looking teeth then the next two methods are for you. These methods are similar in that they involve covering the teeth with a covering. The teeth are covered with either a plastic composite material or a porcelain. The last one is the best, last the longest and is the most natural looking.
Just give us a call at 979-6767 for a free consultation and we can go over your specific situation

Dear Dr. Unger,
My front teeth are separating. I never had space there before. What is happening?
When adults experience spacing of their teeth it is usually a result of advanced gum disease. This disease causes the bone support to erode away and loosens the teeth. This allows the teeth to be easily spread apart. Missing back teeth as well as pressure from the tongue contribute to the problem. X-rays to determine how much bone support is left as well as a bite evaluation is needed.

Dear Dr. Unger,
My teeth are getting yellow. Can they be whitened?
We now have a very effective whitening process. It can be done at home, at your own pace. You simply wear a custom made shell that fits over your teeth which holds the whitening gel. In a few weeks your teeth will be much whiter. You stop when they are white enough for you.

Dear Dr. Unger,
I am 66 years old and have a lower dental plate that I cant stand. It hurts and I can't eat with it and when I talk it pops up. This is my third one and I wonder if there is anything that can be done to tighten it?
There sure is. A simple solution that is available now is to build snaps into the denture and attach it to the jaw by way of implants. This will stabilize the denture making it possible to eat and talk better than ever.
Dr Unger
Dear Dr. Unger,
I have had bonding done two separate times on my upper front tooth due to a chip. This has just come off again after only 1 1/2 years. My teeth are a grayish white. Whenever this tooth had been bonded, the material had a slightly yellowish tint. The dentist told me that this was the best match she could make because the natural grayish hue of my teeth wasn't common. Another dentist told me that he didn't think this bonding was a perfect match either, but the gray was hard to match and it was "good enough". Now that it's time to do the bonding again, I was wondering if this was still the case.
On an internet dental newsgroup, I was once told that I shouldn't settlefor "good enough" because this is a very visible tooth. I was told of a special type of dentist I should be seeing for a perfect color match. I cannot remember the name of this specialty, but I think I looked it up in the phone book at the time. Now, the name Dr. Unger sounds familiar to me, so I'm wondering if you are able to do this perfect color matching. If so, I will call and make an appointment. Please let me know.
Thanks, Donna
Hi Donna,
Getting a "perfect" match on just one front tooth can sometimes be very difficult but is definitely possible. The specialty you probably was referring to is Cosmetic Dentistry. Although it is not officially a specialty, there are some dentists including myself who concentrate on the art and science of repairing and redesigning smiles. I would suggest that you call my office and make an appointment for a free consultation. I would be more than happy to meet with you and discuss your options. Just call us at 718-979-6767.
Dear Dr. Unger,
I am a 47 yr old male with healthy teeth but stained from tetracycline. When I asked my dentist about porcelain veneers, he suggested having my silver fillings replaced and bleaching done before considering the veneers. I'm skeptical about the result I would get from bleaching given the darkness of my teeth. Do you think that bleaching is a valid alternative?
Dear Dirk,
Bleaching severely discolored tetracylcine teeth can be a very long process taking as much as 6 to 8 months of continuous daily home bleaching. The result would be lighter teeth but probably not beautifully lustrous teeth. I think the best option is to power whiten the teeth and then to veneer them with porcelain.
If I haven't answered your question to your satisfaction or you have any further questions please let me know.
Dr Unger
